A telegram to Mrs Hubert Zemke (wife of the commanding officer of the 479th Fighter Group) from Mike Mansfield informing her of Colonel Zemke's liberation from Stalag Luft I, 30 April 1945. Zemke has handwritten on the reverse: 'Note date of tel. 30 April 1945. Soon after the German camp authority liberated Stalag Luft I The underground radio transmitter was given the clear go ahead sign to operate in the clear. 1st priority on my list to SHAEF (MI9) was to get this list of all POWs to higher headquarters and notify of their physical well being. It's eveident from the timing that this same info was then relayed to Washington DC (the war department) and the political replies continue in great haste. Mike Mansfield was the Montana Representative to the US House of Representatives.'
