A P-47 Thunderbolt (serial number 41-6264) of the 56th Fighter Group takes off, March 1943. Passed for publication 16 Mar 1943. Printed caption on reverse: 'Air's "Joe Louis" Is In England. March 1943. This is the first photograph to be taken in England of the new American high-altitude fast fighte, the P-47 "Thunderbolt". Now in quantity production, its 2,000 h.p. engine gives it a speed in excess of 400 mph. Eight guns in the wings give it a tremendous punch, and it has been reported that it was strong enough to stand up to the strain of a 750mph mph power-dive in trials. I. The P-57 "Thunderbolt" in flight, showing clearly the staggered arrangement of the guns in the wings; landing gear retracting.' On reverse: Central Press, US Army Press Censor ETO and US Army General Section Press & Censorship Bureau [Stamps].
