A P-38 Lightning (CL-Y, serial number 42-67030) of the 55th Fighter Group, in flight flown by CaptainT A White, January 1943. Passed for publication 13 Jan 1943. Printed caption on reverse: '...during which 700 bombers blasted all the main bu... of Germany's biggest fighter plane factory at Oschersleben... as well as two other vital plants, long-range fi[ghters] provided escort farther into Germany than ever before. The operation, in which more than 100 enemy figh[ters...] rocket-planes were shot down by the attacking forces... described as a "major military success." On grou[nd...] fighters flew over 400 miles to the target, and, ... the enemy whilst the bombers were dropping their... destroyed 14 Nazis and damaged 20 others... loss to themselves. The picture was taken at a USAAF... Fighter Station, and shows one of the Lightnings... fighter escorts after the great attack.' Printed caption also attached: 'The P-38 "Lightning" fighter which provides long-range cover for the 8th US Air Force bombers, seen in flight. This machine, piloted by Captain T.A. White of Kelso, Washington, took part in the great action in which all the main buildings of the chief German fighter plane factory at Oschersleben, as wel as two other vital plants, were blasted.'
