Detailed History

The North Africa American Cemetery lies over ancient Roman Carthage in Tunisia. The site holds the remains of 2,841 American servicemen who fell in operations across northern Africa and the Persian Gulf. A further 3,724 names are honoured on the wall of missing, many for those lost or buried at sea. A chapel and memorial court document American supply campaigns and military activities across the north African and Persian theatre.

The cemetery was established in 1948, after the existing temporary cemeteries were determined to be inadequate. The site was designed by Moore and Hutchins and landscaped by Bryan J Lynch, it was dedicated in 1960. North Africa American Cemetery is owned and maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission.
