The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial overlooks Omaha Beach near Bayeux in France. The cemetery contains the headstones of 9,387 military servicemen, most who fell during the Normandy invasion on 6 June 1944 and following campaigns. An additional 1,557 names are commemorated on the Wall of Missing for those lost or buried at sea. A chapel circles a large bronze statue that honours the fallen, a large visitor center and panels overlooking the invasion beaches provide orientation and information on the Normandy invasion.



A temporary cemetery was established in Normandy shortly after D-Day on 8 June 1944, it was first American cemetery on European soil. The modern cemetery is a consolidation of 10 temporary cemeteries and the United States is granted a perpetual concession for the site by the French Government. The Cemetery was designed by Harbeson, Hough, Livingston and Larson and landscaped by Markley Stevenson, it was dedicated in 1956. Normandy American Cemetery is the most visited cemetery owned and maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission.
