Detailed History

The Netherlands American Cemetery lies near Maastricht in the Netherlands, it is the only American Cemetery in the Netherlands. The site holds the remains of 8,301 fallen servicemen many who died in ground and airborne operations to liberate eastern Holland or during advances into the Rhine. A further 1,722 names are honoured on the Wall of Missing. A tall memorial and chapel overlook the site and pay respect to the deceased.

The site was liberated by the 30th Infantry Division in September 1944, and a battlefield cemetery was established shortly after by the Ninth Army in November 1944 to accommodate the remains of those who fell in Germany. 43 percent of men who fell in the region are buried at the Netherlands American Cemetery, many reinterred from other nearby temporary cemeteries. The cemetery was designed by Shepley, Bulfinch, Richardson and Abbott and landscaped by Clarke, Rapuano and Halleran, it was dedicated in 1960. The Netherlands American Cemetery is owned and maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission.
