Detailed History

The Ardennes American Cemetery and Memorial lies near Neupré in Belgium, it is one of three American Cemeteries in Belgium, along with Flanders Field (First World War) and Henri-Chappelle. The site contains the headstones of 5,322 military dead, many who fell during the Ardennes Offensive in winter 1944 and the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944- January 1945. An additional 1,722 names are commemorated on the Wall of Missing. Three fifths of the fallen honoured at the Ardennes American Cemetery belong to airmen. A vast stone memorial chapel overlooks the site, emblazoned with an American Eagle, marble maps inside the chapel outline combat and supply activities during the Ardennes campaign.

The site was liberated by the 1st Infantry Division in September 1944, a temporary cemetery was established in February 1945. Following the war the site was chosen as a permanent cemetery, the Graves Registration Service oversaw the reinterment of remains. The American Battle Monuments Commision, who own and maintain the site oversaw the design by Reinhard, Hofmeister and Walquist and landscaping by Richard K Webel. The Ardennes American Cemetery was dedicated in 1960.
