William T Carter

Military

A pilot with the 401st Sqdn 91st BG Carter flew 35 missions from Bassingbourn, initially in 'Little Patches' which was so badly damaged that he was given 'General Ike' as a replacement. He led an all-out raid on the submarine yards at Hamburg and at the de-briefing - a mere 21 year old Lt.- astounded the senior officer in command. After the war Carter was in maritime insurance and was able to confirm that the sub-pens at Hamburg had never been rebuilt!
