William Richard Fleming Jr
Military ROLL OF HONOURMy photograph taken at low tide, about the year 2000.
Capt. William R. Fleming served with the 10th Fighter Squadron, flying Thunderbolts from Lymington (Stn 551). He was born on the 8th of August 1921 to William Richard Fleming senior and his wife Elizabeth (née Early). To differentiate father and son the latter took his second name often using the form ‘Dick’. To confuse matters further William senior had also been a Captain, though in this case serving in the Infantry during the First World War and up until the 1930s.
William junior was born at Madison Barracks in New York state in August 1921. In 1940, the family were living in West Street, Manhattan, New York. At the time William junior, then aged 18, was working as a clerk in retail advertising. With the entry of the United States into World War II on the 8th of December 1941, it was not long before William junior put himself forward. He enlisted on the 20th of January 1942 in New York City, signing up as an air cadet. He was killed in a mid-air collision on the 19th of April 1944 and is buried in the Cambridge Military Cemetery, England.
