WARREN H. BUTTERFIELD, 0-7627Q5, 1st Lieutenant, Air Corps, 387th Bombardment Group (M). For extraordinary achievement against the enemy on 19 November 1944. While serving as lead bombardier on a mission in conjunction with the ground forces, Lt BUTTERFIELD distinguished himself by exceptional bombing technique and perseverance when precision bombing was required in order to safeguard friendly troops. Over the target area extremely dense clouds hampered successful bombing, and when a second run proved unsatisfactory, Lt BUTTERFIELD requested a third and highly successful bombing run over the objective. Despite adverse weather conditions and intense anti-aircraft fire, by his determined and aggressive spirit as well as his outstanding technical ability Lt BUTTERFIELD was instrumental in the effectiveness of this attack. Entered military service from Washington.
