He was killed in action in Herborn-Burg (Hessen, Germany). He crashed with his P-47D-30-RA Thunderbolt ("Couchay Kate") into a church on a cemetery (March 10, 1945). Verlan is buried at the Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten.
