As a teenager in Latvia during WW2 both her and her mother fled, walking on foot through Poland to Germany where they worked in the aircraft factory in Heiligenbeil repairing damaged Luftwaffe aircraft until they were liberated by US troops in early 1945.
They worked as house keepers for the 10th PRG Photo Recon Group at Furth Airfield near Nuremberg, until the end of the war, then other US army units in Occupied Germany, and the IRO (International Refugee Organisation).
She was married and emigrated to Australia in 1950.
