Tony Foulds

Civilian

Tony Foulds looks after, on a voluntary basis, the memorial garden to the crew of the B-17 Flying Fortress 'Mi Amigo' that crashed at Endcliffe Park in 1944. Mr. Foulds was aged seven when he says he saw the 'plane crash at tea-time on 22 February 1944.

The Memorial was paid for by public subscription in 1969 via the Sheffield branch of the Royal Air Force Association, and gifted to Sheffield City Council, who are responsible via the Parks Dept. for the structure and security of the memorial stone and the two plaques thereon. The Association, in conjunction with the US Air Force, have organised an annual commemoration since 1969 to pay tribute to the crew. Ten American Oaks were planted by the council in 1969, one per crewman, and were supplemented this year (2019) with a new American Oak, an information board created by the parks dept, and a flagpole funded by Boeing and pupils from a local school (Birkdale), all to mark the 75th anniversary of the crash. Since 1969, many individuals - and cadet groups - have been involved with the memorial. The garden was, however, only established in October 2018. Most plants and tubs were provided by well-wishers and local businesses.

In 2019 Mr Foulds received a Certificate of Commendation from the US Ambassador in London, and a plaque outside Sheffield Town Hall honouring his services to promoting Sheffield.
