Robert Koehler served in the US Army Air Corps from December 1943 until September 1945. He was trained to fly multi-engine aircraft and assigned to the 730 Squadron of the 452nd Bomb Group (H) based in Deopham Green, England from which he flew 35 missions in B-17G aircraft. He subsequently was assigned as an instrument pilot instructor on multi-engine aircraft in the US.
