Nuremburg, Germany | 24 December 1944 | Lt's Purdy and Florine were mapping near Nurnburg (Nuremburg) when Bob Florine spotted a jet and called a warning to Ira Purdy. The Me-262 attacked Purdy from behind before he could evade. Shells ripped into his left engine and propeller and all along the trailing edge of the wing between the booms. Unarmed but determined to come to the aid of his friend, Florine turned his F-5 into the jet and attacked until he drove the German away from Purdy's crippled aircraft. Having successfully drove the jet off, Florine flew cover as Purdy limped home. Purdy was able to make a crash landing at Denain/Prouvy, escaping before flames consumed the wreckage. |
