He was at college on an athletics scholarship when he was called up and accepted into the Aviation Cadet Program. After training he and his crew left the USA on Easter morning 1944 and flew via Iceland to Grafton-Underwood. He was to fly on 31 missions, the final ones being in support of the Allied break-out from St Lo. He was discharged in November 1947, operated a trucking business for 30 years and a black angus farm for 12. He also built his own aeroplane in the basement of his home - a Glastar - which he flew in his retirement.
