Assigned to 614BS, 401BG, 8AF USAAF. Failed to Return (FTR) Osccherlsleben in B-17 42-38002; hit by flak, A/C set upon by fighters, 1 x engine dead, controls shotup, crew baled out. Schmidt could not bale out as parachute riddled by bullets, fought of fighters, downing a Me110, damaging a Me109 and a Ju88. Now alone on A/C with dead crewman, regained enough control to belly land A/C in potato field in Alvesse, NW of Brunswick. Captured 21-1-44. Prisoner of War (POW). MACR 2661.
