Enlisted in the Army in 1941 and after receiving his commission, he led the 488th Bombardment Squadron on 53 combat missions, piloting B-25s over Tunisia, Sicily, France and Italy, including the raid of Monte Casino (as a member of the 488th Bombardment Squadron, 340th Bombardment Group). Recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster and numerous other decorations. Preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Virginia; and his parents, Curtis and Myrtle Cassada.
