"Haskell Child Hit by Car Dies
HASKELL, Dec. 2--(SpD--)
Joe Quinton Bailey, two-year-old son of Mrs. Quinton Bailey, young widow of a Haskell war hero, died instantly from injuries received when he was struck by a car in downtown Haskell at 4:55 p. m. Monday. The child broke away from his mother as she was buying ice cream in a corner drugstore and ran into the street. He was hit by a slow-moving automobile, driven by W. H. Tippen, longtime resident of Haskell."
"The boy was taken to the Haskell county hospital where his grandmother, Mrs. V. C. Bailey of Haskell assured the grief-stricken driver that the family held him "entirely blameless" in the accident. 2/Lt. Quinton Bailey, member of the Army Air Force, was shot down in October, 1944 over Germany. His widow is the former Ruth Balke of Houston. The paternal grandfather, V. C. Bailey, also survives. Funeral arrangements were incomplete Monday."

Other Killed in Action (KIA) |
12 October 1944 | I saw the #6 ship in the lead squadron go down. One second they were flying along, the next second they were a mass of flames from the leading edge of the wing back to the tail. The wing came off and the plane nosed over into a spin and then the tail broke off at the rear bomb bay. I don't think anyone could have possibly gotten out unless maybe the navigator did. It looked like flames might have been in the cockpit as well. Maybe it's not so bad to get knocked down if you have a chance to bail out, but those boys had no chance. Most of them had been burned to death before they knew what hit them. - Paul W Perry flying squadron lead in the squadron behind Bailey's a/c witnessed the Bailey Crew being shot down. | |
