Left Boston aboard a converted cruise ship along with 1st Lt William 'Bill' Preddy as casual[unassigned] officers supervising a boatload of replacement troops. Due to the battle of the bulge, the delivery of the troops had a higher priority than getting the officers to the UK and so the ship made straight for Le Havre. Preddy and Barnhart caught a train to Paris and the 9th AF replacement depot and then via air to the UK. Assigned to 354FS, 355FG, 8AF USAAF. Transferred to 360FS, 370FG, 9AF USAAF. 32 x combat missions.
Credited with 2 x confirmed kills, 1 x damaged. Also 3.5 ground kills.
