Peter Broadley

Military

Broadley was assigned to Shipdham as an RAF Liaison from August 1942, and helped to prepare the base communications for arrival of the first American forces from September 1942.

After Shipdham was formally handed over to the USAAF in May 1943, Broadley was assigned to an RAF Substitution Unit, which came under the command of the 2nd Bomb Wing, in line with its establishment at Ketteringham Hall in June 1943. Broadley worked to maintain teleprinter serves across the Wing's bases.

On 4 September 1943, Broadley enjoyed a joy ride in B-24 Liberator 41-23813 Victory Ship. He also watched the Medal of Honor ceremony for Leon Johnson on 22 November 1943, from Shipdham's weather office.

Broadley's duties at Shipdham came to an end in April 1944, when the first American teletype machine was installed in the Weather Office- effectively negating the need for RAF staff to support the bases communications systems, but he ended up setting up the teletype machine in the bases War Room ahead of the invasion of Normandy in the summer of 1944. He was reassigned to an RAF Unit in Gloucestershire on 27 June 1944, and learned that 'life in the ETO could be rough'!
