Hit by flak, trying to get back to base. Their B-24 'Alfred' #42-7485, lost 3 engines but got them restarted; lost fuel and realized they might have to ditch in North Sea. Did make it back to land and crashed near Sheringham. Injured. Later was shot down and became a Prisoner of War (POW) on B-24 'Knucklehead'. Only member of crew to bail out. Plane crashlanded in sea near Westgate-Kent
