Memorial ID56654747 ·2nd Lt. Orvest G. Ellingson of Brady, Montana, A.S. # 0820888 was piloting the B-17G, #231720, "Blue Blazing Blizzard" on a run to Ludwigshafen, Germany September 8, 1944. At approximately 11:53 a.m. shortly after bombs away, she was hit by two flak bursts, the second striking the number 3 engine on the right wing, causing a catastrophic fire. The bailout order was given, but the wing came off, the plane went into a spiral and then exploded at approximately 25,000 feet. Three other crew perished and five were blown clear and were able to deploy their parachutes and were captured. The crash site was indicated as 5 kilometers northwest of Lampertheim/Hessen near Lache. They flew with the 8th Air Force, 379th Heavy Bomb Group, 524th Squadron out of Kimbolton, England. The Missing Air Crew Report (MACR) Number is 8844.
The MACR states those KIA were buried at the Cemetery Lampertheim near Weinheim on Bergstrasse, September 17, 1944. Lt. Ellingson was placed in grave number 13. His next of kin was listed as Edwin O. Ellingson, father.
It appears that his remains were later moved to Plot E, Row 5, Grave 31 at the Lorraine American Cemetery in St. Avold, France.
