After completing there bomb run over Germany, B-17 #42-3337, named "Thoroughbred", was attacked by German fighters and severely damaged. Pilot James S. Mullins and co-pilot Melvin A. Mercer attempted to fly their wounded aircraft to Sweden but crashed into the Baltic Sea.
