29 May 1944 In May 30, 1944 letter home he writes " When I got back yesterday I had quite a pleasant surprise. I had no more stepped into the flight room than everyone started congratulating me. What do you know, I am now a first Lt." His May 28th letter makes no mention of it and that was written in the late afternoon or evening.

Killed in Action (KIA)

Germany 7 July 1944 Aircraft hit by flak near Naumburg, Germany. Eyewitnesses told parents who had visited his grave in Blankenhaim Germany in 1949 that they say him leave his plane and as he descended he appeared to by trying to avoid a barn and his chute collapsed and he fell to his death. He was taken to the "dead house" and 3 days later was buried in the old cemetery in Blankenhaim.
