Killed in service 29-Dec-43. Accident in B-17 42-39883 'Ruthless' flying through overcast, plane crashed into a mountain while on a non-operational mission to transport crew members who had completed tours of duty to another field for return to the US.
Crew was enroute to R&R and transferring tour expired colleagues to Scotland, so they could return to ZI via ship. Navigation error caused A/C to descend out of overcast and collide with mountain. Killed in Service (KIS)
