Kenneth Riley Williams

Military

Lt Kenneth Williams was a member of the 353rd Fighter Group and was on temporary duty with the 355th. His P-47D Thunderbolt # 42-8443 was hit by ground fire while making a low-level strafing attack on a German airfield at Châteaudun, France on 26 March 1944. His bullets ignited the fuel dump and the resulting explosive debris (ED) damaged his aircraft. He crashlanded in loose dry dirt near Donnemain-Saint-Mamès, ±3km NE of Châteaudun, Eure-et-Loir, France. He was only slightly wounded, with lumps and cuts on his head and arm. Helped, clothed, fed, sheltered and transported by French citizens and members of the Résistance, he was guided to Paris. Left Paris for Morlaix and was finally led to Brittany. He boarded a British Motor Gun Boat (MGB 502) at Beg-an-Fry on 15 April 1944 which brought him, an RAF airman and an USAAF Sergent back to England on 16 April.
