John Murphy served as a pilot with the 535th Bomb Squadron of the 381st Bomb Group, flying bombing missions out of Ridgewell, England. John flew 35 missions from July 1944 - March 1945. He flew B-17 42-31990 'Stage Door Canteen' and 42-32060 'Boulder Buf.

Murphy was injured in the legs by flak on the mission when the latter aircraft crashed on 9 December 1944 but was back in the pilots seat 3 weeks later to complete 14 more missions
