Thoman, Rochester, NY, who recently shot down an Me-109, examines the cockpit of a similar enemy plane at a former Luftwaffe field as fellow 9th AF Republic P-47 Thunderbolt pilots look on. The pilots were given the opportunity to see at first hand many German aircraft which they have previously encountered in aerial combat or while strafing enemy fields when their group moved east of the Rhine to their second German airfield. 15 enemy planes of several types were found on the abandoned base.

In the Photo, Lt. James L. McWhorter of the 365th FG / 386th FS..is top / center.

 

I see that the historian for the 466th Bomb Group had added an edit to the page.  Unless known..I find it both remarkable and one-in-a-million chance that two men are tied together in this one post.  James L. McWhorter..was the Brother-In-Law to Ernest H. (Harold) Ratliff of the 466th BG  / 585th SQ., where he serves as a Tail Gunner in the Greiner Crew who went down on March 2, 1945 in Germany..w/ Harold and three others going down in the B-24 on their very first Mission... 

 

This information is being posted by Stephen D. Mcwhorter, Nephew to James L. McWhorter and as well Ernest H. Ratliff, an Uncle I never met...
