Lt. Hubert Womble was assigned to the 409th Bomb Squadron, the 93rd Bomb Group, in the 8th Air Force at Hethel, U.K. in 1942. He was temporarily detached (TDY) from the 8th, to the 9th Air Force and moved to Benghazi, Libya. He flew one mission to Rome, Italy, before taking part in Operation Tidal Wave, to Ploesti. On the Ploesti mission, his plane, 42-40265, Honkey Tonk Gal, was hit over it's target by flak and crash landed (FTR). Lt. Womble and his crew were taken prisoner by the Romanians, with their bombardier dying of his injuries, later, in a Romanian hospital. 1 x KIA. 9 x POW. 1-Aug-43. AC force landed in Romania.
