Object Number - UPL 39067 - Captain Howard Fogg with "Moose Nose" P-51D-5 Mustang CV-D 44-13762. 359th Fighter Group, 368th Fighter Squadron.

May 1943-May 1944, 76 missions, 271 hours, P-51D 44-13762 'Moose Nose'.

Captain Howard L. Fogg Jr., of Summit, New Jersey, enlisted on 15 May 1941. Assigned to the 368th Fighter Squadron in March 1943, then the 370th Fighter Squadron briefly before returning to the 368th on 14 June 1944, he flew 76 combat missions with the 359th Fighter Group before completing his tour of duty in September 1944.

15 April 1944: Next day there was another Jackpot. The Group was one of the two in the Fighter Command which did not lose one or more pilots, as bad weather and alerted German defenses cost the Command 30 MIAs. Few aircraft were found in the buzzing of Oldenburg, Kayhauserfeld, Varel, Wittmundhafen and Hage. The flight assigned to attack Jever aborted and Swischenan, because of the 353rd’s bad experience with its flak, was not assigned for attack. Among the claims of the day was a locomotive destroyed by Captain Fogg, a notorious lover and brilliant painter of trains, whose room at the Hall contained not only dozens of water colors of locomotives but a scale-model steam loco which lustily puffed around the room for the fascination of all observers. Fogg also executed his first oil of the month, an air combat scene for the redecorated fluorescent-lighted new bar at Wretham Hall.

10 June 1944: Early on the 10th (35 up at 0708) Colonel Swanson led an escort of heavies into Lyreux (the bomb scheme now was simply to crater the landing grounds and runways and keep them unserviceable). The fighters were asked to spot and flash bomb results. Captain Howard Fogg led the spotter flight, didn’t like the system, suggested a new one, which was telephoned to Wing Intelligence. Colonel Syndey M. Rogers, Wing A-2, presented Fogg’s plan to General Anderson, who rang up Ajax, and next day’s Field Order stipulated Fogg’s idea; Thus the quick flow of tactical ideas from the field.
