Gaylord enlisted in January 1942, trained at Mechanics School and shipped to England aboard the 'Queen Mary' that September. On missions days the ground crew would be on duty from midnight to pre-flight the aircraft and top up the fuel tanks etc. He never got 'too close' to the fliers in case they didn't come back. He was discharged in September 1945, returned to farming

and operated camping area.
