Hill taught himself to fly gliders as early as 1937. Began his career in 1939 in the Army Air Corps. He became a flight commander [308FS] and in May-42 went to England where the 31st Fighter Group was flying Spitfires. Hill participated in invasions over Dieppe, France, North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He became first ace of the 31st fighter group in 1943 and then the group's commander. He flew 166 combat missions. Hill commanded various fighter groups in France, Germany, Greenland and New York, before being named Director of operations at Air Defense Command in Colorado Springs. In 1992 Col Hill was inducted into the New Jersey Aviation hall of fame.



Awards: SS, DFC, LOM (2 OLC), AM (19 OLC), OCC, WWII Victory, EAME (4 Bronze star), American defense and campaign, National defense, Commendation medal, Longevity Service Award (6 OLC).
