"The young Oklahoma man whose wartime exploits provided such riveting wartime reading passed away in 1980. Born in 1921, he was the son of Rosie and Auston Thompson. His grave stone in Del City, Oklahoma has carved B-17's on it and notation of his past as member of the Eighth Air Force and as a prisoner. Floyd fell prisoner to German guns on 21st July 1944. At this time he was flying with the 414th Bomb Squadron of the 97th Bomb Group. This unit was based in the Mediterranean area and Floyd may have volunteered for a second tour. Floyd's son Ronald E Thompson was killed in action as a US Marine in Vietnam in 1968."
