DONALD A. ANGELL, Sr. 86, of The Villages, Florida passed away on January 18, 2008. He had been a resident of the Palm Beach Gardens area since 1968 after retiring from the US Air Force as a Major. He had resided at The Villages since September 2003. He was born in Battle Creek, Michigan on April 12, 1921. He graduated from Battle Creek Central High School and attended the University of Miami Florida Class of 1943. An accomplished musician, he played saxophone and clarinet in his high school band and orchestra, at the University of Miami and in numerous dance bands. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and entered active duty in February 1943. He graduated from Aviation Cadets as a Second Lieutenant in February 1944. After further training he was assigned to the 9th Air Force, 50th Fighter Group, 10th Fighter Squadron in the European theater of operations as a P-47 Thunderbolt fighter pilot, completing 87 missions. Lieutenant Angell separated from the service in 1945 and subsequently joined the Michigan Air National Guard, flying the P-51 Mustang. Recalled to active duty with the squadron in early 1951, Captain Angell spent two years at Selfridge Air Force Base, Michigan. This was followed by a three year tour at Wheelus Field in Tripoli, Libya flying F-86 Saber jets. His last assignment was at Wurtsmith Air Force Base, Oscoda, Michigan. After leaving the Air Force, he became a Palm Beach Deputy Sheriff, serving as a bailiff until he retired in 1994. Mr. Angell was a co-founder and past president of the Exchange Club of the Northern Palm Beaches and a life member of the P-47 Thunderbolt Pilots Association. He was also a member of the Military Officers Association, the Air Force Association and the American Military Society. He was a member of the North Lake Presbyterian Church, Lady Lake, Florida. Don is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances E. Angell (Venn); two sons, Don Angell (Debbie) of Battle Creek, Michigan and Scott Angell (Jennie) and grandchildren (Sabrina and Damian) of Willits, California; two daughters, Lynnette Angell (Pat Chambers) of Palmer, Alaska and Lisa Angell of Traverse City, Michigan. A celebration of life service will be held on January 23, 2008 at the Angell family home at The Villages.
