Dayton A Boostrom

Military

Before being called into active service in September 1942 Dayton Boostrom was a mechanic and member of the Illinois Reserve Militia. He spent the next year going from one technical training field or school to another - one of them being Willow Run, where he was promoted Crew Chief.

Dayton was a married man, his daughter Carolyn Sue aged just eight months when he began his training. By the time he left for England she - still less than two years old - along with her mother Ethel had travelled 10,000 miles accompanying Dayton. He was posted to the 446th BG and arrived at Bungay in Suffolk in late October 1943. One of the planes in his charge was unnamed so it was designated 'Carolyn Sue'.

Dayton Boostrom was to be awarded the Bronze Star for his devotion to duty; the 'Carolyn Sue' sadly was shot down. After the war Dayton kept in touch with his best friend and fellow crew chief on 707th Sqdn. Harris Del Reams. Both men died in August 2000 less than twenty four hours apart.
