This P-51 started out with McNally as YF-J in the 358th fighter squadron, 355th fighter group before going with him to the Experimental Scouting Force where the YF code was underscored to differentiate it. S/Sgt. Monnier stayed with the 358th FS. It then went with him to the 1st Scouting Force at Honington where it eventually became 9H-J "Chip" of Lt. Merrill J Dumont.
