Sonderhausen, Germany 8 April 1945 Towles flew a total of five missions with the 416th BG. The first four in March 1944 he was Squadron Commander of the 669th BS. The fifth mission came over a year later in April 1945 in which it appears he flew as an observer. It's assumed but not as yet confirmed that he had been promoted to a Wing or Division level position in the meantime.

27 miles NW of Marlalena, New Mexico 3 December 1948 Towles was flying RF-80 #45-8474 when it crashed in New Mexico. He was serving as the Commander of the 12th Recon. Squadron based at March Field, California
