Military ROLL OF HONOURPilot. Atkinson crew. 381st BG, 533rd BS. Shot down 17 August 1943 in AC 42-29983 'Uncle Sammy'. Mission #20 "Black Tuesday" to the ball bearing works at Schweinfurt, Germany. MACR 398. Killed in Action (KIA). Buried by the Germans in Community cemetery of Reifferscheid.
1Lt Atkinson bailed out of the aircraft with Lt Dulberger. They spoke to each other while descending until they landed on opposite sides of a hill. Another crew member saw Lt Atkinson on the ground at a distance. He lost sight of him and then heard gunfire. German civilians reported to authorities that they witnessed Lt Atkinson's parachute fail to open.
