Brendan Byrne served as squadron navigator for the 414th Bomb Squadron of the 97th Bomb Group, flying 50 missions in Europe. After the war, he went to college on the GI Bill, studying public and international affairs at Princeton University. He then studied law at Harvard University. After serving the state of New Jersey as an attorney and judge, Byrne served as a Democratic governor of New Jersey between 1974 and 1982, during which time he legalized casinos in the state.
