Arthur W Mack Sr
MilitaryBoth Arthur Mack and his brother Phil attended Flying School 43D. Co-pilot Phil flew over to the UK in August 1943 and pilot Arthur and crew joined them three months later. Arthur completed 30 missions with the 91st at Bassingbourn, being awarded the DFC for a raid over Halberstadt January 11th 1944. His plane came under heavy fire from German fighters, an engine caught fire and the rudder cables were severed. Rather than abandon the three wounded men on board the rest of the crew elected to try to make it back to England. Mack managed to land at the 379th BG base at Kimbolton and all of the crew survived. In civilian life Arthur Mack went on to a career as an airline Captain, his death 21st August 2002 was reported by his brother.
He flew 28 missions from 20 Dec 1943 to 20 May 1944. He flew 13 of those missions in the "Four Leaf Clover" B-17. He flew first pilot on all his missions due to the heavy losses in the 367th BS. Mack flew a second tour - totalling 50 missions - which he completed in Jan/Feb 1945.
He afterwards flew with American Airlines retiring in 1988 and held a commission in USAF Reserve.
