On June 22, 1944, as part of the 378th FS, 2Lt. Bessey was flying his P-47 as 'Blue 3' in a 3-ship formation. After dropping their 3 - 250 lb. bombs on targets south of Cherbourg using "glide bombing procedure", his unit began strafing ground targets in line abreast formation. He radioed that he had been hit by ground fire, then impacted the ground moments later.
