He was on his 33rd mission. He won his gunner's wings on Christmas Eve 1943.
In 1952 he moved to Huntsville, where he joined the ABMA Missile Team at Redstone Arsenal. He worked on the team that developed internal guidance systems for the Redstone and Jupiter C missile and was awarded five patents. George joined NASA in 1965 and had a long and distinguished career at Marshall Space Flight Center. He worked on Spacelab I, II and other systems and received numerous awards including the coveted Silver Snoopy.
