Lille, France mission in B-24 41-23667 'Ball of Fire', plugged a gaping hole in the fuel lines by wrapping his hands around the 3" gash, thus ensuring his crew and aircraft made it home safely. Due to the freezing temperatures, he was relieved in turns by crewmates Orval Huff, Thaddeus Hawkins and Edward Eichmann.
