P *2 Lt Robert L Mitchell
On return from an operational mission, flew over the runway in use at Mount Farm, pulled up, chopping the throttles to kill his speed. Thinking he was flying on drop tanks when actually he was on main tanks and changed his cocks to land on Reserve Tanks. The a/c had one engine out and the other was barely ticking over. The a/c came in in a slow glide, crashing through the tops of several trees and landed in a field. and crashed at The Coppice, Clifton Hampden, Oxfordshire. The a/c, carrying drop tanks, exploded and burned. KOM.
Note:- Initially buried in Brookwood Cemetery before reinterment in Cambridge Cemetery, Plot A-4-18.
