Manufactured by Douglas in Long Beach, California, and accepted by the USAAF on 9 December, 1944; Departed Long Beach and routed through Lincoln Army Airfield in Lincoln, Nebraska, on 11 December, 1944; Departed Lincoln and arrived at Dow Army Airfield in Bangor, Maine, on 22 December, 1944; Departed Dow and assigned to 15th Army Air Force in Italy on 31 December, 1944; Received and available for service on 18 January, 1945; Assigned to 463BG/772BS in Celone, Italy on 23 January, 1945. Aircraft ditched in Tyrrhenian Sea on 1 August, 1945, with 1st Lt. Albert Lazar (Pilot), 2nd Lt. Joseph M. Johnson (Co-Pilot), F/O Robert M. Cashman (Navigator), SSgt Frank S. Peters (Engineer), SSgt Bernard C. Doherty (Radioman), along with twenty high-point Army soldiers on the first leg of their return home after WWII. Burning engine dropped off, aircraft ditched in deep water midway between Naples and Sardinia; 13 killed, 12 survivors rescued twelve hours after crash by passing ship.
