On 29-Nov-43 the aircraft, piloted by MAJ Milton Joel (Commanding Officer of 38FS), was despatched with other P-38s of 55FG to provide escort for bombers attacking at Bremen, Germany. The aircraft was attacked by German fighters near Oldenburg, Germany as MAJ Joel attempted to return to England. The aircraft and pilot were lost in the sea off the coast of Holland. 1KIA MACR 1429
