The B-24D, 42-40115, named, Boomerang, was originally assigned to the 8th Air Force, the 389th Bomb Group, and the 566th Bomb Squadron based in Britain and, like many other 8th Air Force B-24s, it was later in 1942, temporarily detached (TDY) to the 9th Bomber Command in North Africa, to assist the 9th Air Force on Operation Tidal Wave, to destroy the German held oil refineries at Ploesti, Romania. It flew on Operation Tidal Wave bombing the Ploesti oil refineries, flown by Lt. Melvin E. Neef. Boomerang, 42-40115, flown by Lt. Neef, was shot down and lost on Operation Tidal Wave over Ploesti, Romania. It failed to return from the mission. FTR. 1 Aug 1943. MACR 159 This B-24D should not be confused with the B-24D, 41-23722, named, Bomerang, not, Boomerang, or the B-24H, 41-29425, which was also in the 8th Air Force in Britain, and, like, 42-40115, It was also named, Boomerang.
