6 June 1944 - 6 June 1944 | Completed two flights during Operation Overlord.First flight occurred at 01:20 as part of Operation Boston. "Sugar Blues" was flown by Michael F. Bussman as Chalk #39 of Serial #13. It completed its flight, dropping elements of 3rd Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment onto Drop Zone 'C' to the west of Sainte-Marie-Du-Mont. Second flight occurred at 23:10 as part of Operation Elmira. "Sugar Blues" was flown by a pilot named "Kearns" as Chalk #36 of Serial #33. It completed it's flight, towing a CG-4A glider carrying elements of the 82nd Airborne Division to Drop Zone 'W' about 2 miles southeast of Sainte-Mère-Église. The CG-4A glider carried by "Sugar Blue" on this flight was flown by a pilot named "Collins." | |

19 September 1944 | "Sugar Blues" was shot down by German flak on a glider tow mission over Oud Turnhout, Belgium on September 19, 1944. Returning from the LZ and heading towards the IP, "Sugar Blues" suffered a direct hit to one of her engines. She entered a steep left dive and continued to spiral until impacting in Rhoode.All crew were killed, they were:1st Lt. Romie Alexoff, Pilot2nd Lt. Leonard S. Osborne, Co-PilotT/Sgt Hans A. Brunisholz, Aerial EngineerS/Sgt Orville H. Thompson, Radio OperatorToday, there is a monument dedicated to these men nearby the impact point of the aircraft. |
