This is one of a series of photos taken before the above mentioned accident on 7th September 1943 at Westleton, Suffolk. Major Duncan, with Lt. Rose as passenger, landed at the crash landing of a 351st Fighter Squadron P-47 Thunderbolt piloted by Lt. Vernon A. Leatherman (a/c YJ-N 41-6585). On attempting to take off and return to Metfield, Major Duncan hit a hedge and flipped the Tiger Moth onto its back. Major Duncan and Lt. Rose were unhurt Roger Freeman Collection

Assigned to the 351FS, 353FG, 8AF USAAF. On 7-Sep-43 the aircraft, piloted by 1LT Vernon A. Leatherman, made a crash landing at Westleton, Suffolk, UK when it ran out of gas returning from an mission escorting B-17s in the attack on the German airfield at Brussels, Belgium. The aircraft was repaired and returned to service.



On 15-Feb-44 the aircraft was involved in a taxi accident with Lt. Hugh D. Chapman (per littlefriends.co.uk)



Bishop & Hey have this aircraft as sustaining a mid-air collision near Atcham in April 1944, but no other documentation could be found.



Transferred to 495FTG, 8AF USAAF. Collided mid air with Miles Master II DL477 23-Apr-44, shearing off port wing, pilot baled out RTD. A/C crashed at farm at Eyton-on-Severn near Shrewsbury. Miles Master crashed resulting in the death of RAF pilot Sgt Arthur Goddard.
